About Trashigang

Trashigang is the largest district in Bhutan and a bustling hub of activity in the eastern part of the country. It is often referred to as the "Jewel of the East" due to its rich cultural heritage, stunning landscapes, and strategic location. The town is perched on a scenic hillside overlooking the Drangme Chhu (Bhutan's largest river) and was once an important center for trade with Tibet. Today, it serves as a central marketplace for semi-nomadic communities and a junction for the East-West highway.

Trashigang Dzong

Trashigang Dzong

This "Fortress of the Auspicious Hill" was built in 1659 to defend against Tibetan invasions. Perched on a high cliff, it is a magnificent example of Bhutanese architecture and a symbol of the region's strength and history.

Sakteng Wildlife Sanctuary

Sakteng Wildlife Sanctuary

A protected area created to conserve the unique ecosystems of eastern Bhutan. The sanctuary is also famous for being a habitat for the elusive migoi, a yeti-like creature in which the locals believe.
