About Thimphu

Thimphu is the capital and largest city of the Kingdom of Bhutan. Unlike most capital cities, it does not have traffic lights, with traffic flow being managed by police officers at key intersections. Situated in a beautiful valley on the banks of the Wang Chhu river, Thimphu serves as the political, economic, and religious heart of the country. It offers a unique blend of traditional Bhutanese culture, with its ancient monasteries and dzongs, and the gradual introduction of modern amenities and infrastructure.

Buddha Dordenma

Buddha Dordenma

A massive statue of Shakyamuni Buddha located on a hill overlooking Thimphu Valley. It was built to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the fourth king of Bhutan and is a symbol of peace.

Tashichho Dzong

This impressive fortress and monastery is the seat of the government of Bhutan. Located on the banks of the Wang Chhu river, it is a magnificent example of Bhutanese architecture and houses the throne room of the King.

A popular landmark and a sacred stupa in the heart of the city. It was built in 1974 in memory of Bhutan's third king. Many devotees circumambulate the chorten throughout the day.
