About Gangtey

Gangtey, also known as Phobjikha Valley, is a breathtaking glacial valley in central Bhutan. It is one of the most important wildlife conservation sites in the country, especially for the rare and migratory Black-necked Cranes that fly from the Tibetan Plateau to roost here during the winter. The valley's landscape is a perfect blend of vast open grasslands, marshy plains, and forested hillsides, offering a tranquil escape and unparalleled opportunities for nature lovers and hikers.

Gangtey Monastery

Gangtey Gonpa (Monastery)

Perched on a hill overlooking the valley, this magnificent 17th-century monastery is a key religious center of the Nyingma school of Buddhism. The cranes are said to circle the monastery three times upon their arrival and departure from the valley.

Black-necked Crane Information Centre

Black-necked Crane Information Centre

Situated on the edge of the wetlands, this center provides detailed information on the endangered cranes. It features a viewing room with a high-power telescope for visitors to observe the birds without disturbing them.

Gangtey Nature Trail

Nyelung Dechenling Temple

Nyelung Dechenling

A sacred temple that was once a residence of a Nyingma master. It contains interesting relics, including a cypress tree said to have grown from his walking stick, and is a site of deep spiritual significance.

Kuenzang Chholing Shedra

Damchen Lhakhang
